The Hallamshire Harrier was a talented youngster, representing her country at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and despite winning European junior and under-23 medals, Lyne, who studied at Butler University in Indianapolis, only made a breakthrough on the senior stage in 2006, running 1:58.20 for 800m to move to third on the British all-time lists behind Kelly Holmes and Kirsty Wade. A few weeks later, Lyne won the AAA Championships 800m and qualified for the European Championships over 800m and 1500m.

In Gothenburg, Lyne battled in the homestraight to claim the bronze medal over 800m, but had to withdraw from the heats of the 1500m. However, the Brit returned with some good results on the European circuit.

Unfortunately, Lyne could not capitalise on her success from 2006. In 2007, Becky was forced to miss the World Championships with an injury and further injuries hampered her 2008 campaign, and was short of form at the Olympic Trials in Birmingham.
