Sayers, who had previously represented her county at a number of sports, including hockey, tennis and netball, found her niche in javelin throwing and was a very talented youngster, placing in the top eight at world youth and world junior competitions. She made a good transition to the senior ranks, making the final in her World Championships debut in 2005 and European Championships debut in 2006.
In 2007, she broke Kelly Morgan’s national record, throwing 65.05m in Loughborough, but disappointed at the World Championships, crashing out in qualification after many tipped her to win a medal.
In 2008, Sayers was consistently beyond 60m before Beijing and in those Olympic Games she restored her reputation as a championship performer, improving her national record in the final, throwing 65.75m to finish a meritorious fourth.
After an injury wrecked 2009 with a stress fracture of the shoulder she did well to start competing again early season and off a short run-up managed 59.77m at Loughborough. Things were looking not as bad as was predicted by some and at Birmingham in the World Trials she did enough to win and then went on to the Aviva London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace and fell just short of 60m throwing 59.82m for a season's best. At the World Championships she was disappointed to finish down in eighth place at the qualifying stage and didn't make the final. With a lack of preparation which affected her timing and fitness this was her lowest mark for six years. 2010 saw a good start to the season with a throw of 63.15m to win the CAU Inter-Counties Championships and a second place at the European Team Championships. At the Aviva European Championship Trials she again won the UK title but in the process picked up an injury that ultimately ended her season and hopes of European and Commonwealth success. Olympic year promised much with a classy win at the London Diamond League throwing a PB of 66.17m. However, disaster struck after injury to her throwing arm in that competition and although she had intensive treatment she broke down in London at the qualifying stage of the Olympics.
Goldie also enjoys pottery and photography and is a classically trained violinist. Her father, the late country singer Pete Sayers, was the first Englishman to play in the world-famous Grand Ole Opry, Nashville, Tennessee and also had his own breakfast show in the USA. She gained first class honours in sport and exercise science at Loughborough University. She was also the national under 12 table tennis champion.
