Tom improved his lifetime best from 2.24m to 2.29m in 2007 to make the British team for the World Championships, where he surprisingly qualified for the final, placing 10th.
The Birchfield Harrier, who is a part-time librarian at Aston University, continued to improve in 2008, winning the Olympic Trials in a lifetime best of 2.30m, before qualifying for his second consecutive global final, finishing eighth in Beijing. 2009 was a below par year with only a third place at the Aviva World Trials but 2010 saw him close to his best again with three clearances at 2.28m and after a disappointing European Championships where he failed to clear the bar he bounced back at the Commonwealth Games to finish in fifth place.
Tom got into athletics after watching the Barcelona Olympics and also from seeing the AAA championships staged in Birmingham when he was a youngster. He studied for a BSc in Sport and PE at UWIC. He is a keen Aston Villa fan and has excelled in swimming, cricket, rugby and skiing outside of athletics. He often wears his “lucky Villa” socks when competing.
