Steve Surety is a Lecturer of Sport at New City College London, one of the UK’s largest and most respected Further Education providers, rated Outstanding by Ofsted. With over a decade of experience in this role, he specialises in delivering high-quality sport and physical education, helping students build strong foundations for careers in sport, teaching, and performance. t
Alongside his teaching, Steve plays an active role in youth athletics as part of the Essex Schools Athletics Team, serving as Senior Boys Team Manager and relay lead. Working within a committed and experienced team, he contributes to Essex’s continued success as one of the country’s most competitive and high-achieving counties on the national schools athletics stage.
Steve is a coach based at Basildon Athletics Club, a recognised centre for sprint and hurdles development in the UK. He continues the legacy of his late father, Chris Surety, who held the UK 400m hurdles record from 1961 to 1964 and was instrumental in developing grassroots athletics in the region. Carrying this ethos forward, Steve has coached a line of national-level hurdlers from club to championship level and has worked with international sprint hurdler Sam Bennett since the age of 14. Both are involved in the British Athletics Furtes Programme, supporting the development of elite young hurdlers and promoting a clear pathway from grassroots to podium.
A former international 400m hurdler himself, Steve brings first-hand experience of high performance to both his teaching and coaching. He holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Sport Sciences from Brunel University London, and began his teaching career via a PGCE in Physical Education at Canterbury Christ Church University, gaining Qualified Teacher Status in Secondary PE.
With a blend of academic expertise, elite-level coaching experience, and a deep commitment to youth development, Steve remains dedicated to helping athletes and students realise their full potential.
