John was a late starter to athletics despite being area champion over 80m when aged 11, ran his first 100 at the age of 15, winning the School Sports in 12.3s, running in pumps. At 16, John was Area Champion over 100m & 4th in the South-Notts Champs'. As an Air Cadet, John was East Midland Wing Champion over 100m & Long Jump; in the North-East England Champs, John won silver in the 100 (11.8s for a new pb) & 4 x 100, running a memorable last leg to come from 4th to 2nd & passing the 100m winner along the way! It wasn't until April 1978, that John finally joined Notts AC....more to follow. John had a solid existance as a senior athlete & was always considered a good club man - helped Notts AC to gain promotion into Division one of the Midland League & numerous successes in the City League & County League. Coached by Jack Surgey from Aug 1980 until around early 1983. Achieved times of 11.2, 22.8, & 52.5 (relay leg) for the 100, 200, & 400 respectively. Not the brightest star in the NOtts AC line-up, but a county champion and Notts AC's fastest man in 1982. More to follow...
