Shelly suffered a spinal cord injury falling 20ft from a tree when aged 11. She is rated as one of GB’s outstanding young wheelchair racers. She hit the headlines at 2005 London Marathon when finishing 2nd in her first marathon, beating Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson into 3rd. Shelly won the London Marathon for 1st time in 2007 and broke the British record for T54 marathon at the Padova marathon, Italy in April 2008, clocking 1:37.44. She played wheelchair basketball as a junior and spends much of her time in Australia training with her coach Andrew Dawes.
On her Paralympic debut, in Beijing, Shelly enjoyed a successful Games, winning 1500m silver, 5000m bronze and a just missed out on a third medal in the marathon, finishing 4th after a sprint finish. The 5000m bronze medal was won in controversial circumstances. Shelly was awarded silver originally, even going as far as the medal ceremony. But following a protest regarding a crash on the penultimate lap, the race was re-run two days later. Shelly's picked herself up to earn a place on the podium for the second time.
