David took up athletics at the age of eight and went on to compete at the 1996 Atlanta Games when just 17, after which he dropped out of the sport for a few years, missing the Sydney Games in 2000. He returned to the Paralympic stage in Athens where he won 100m silver and 200m bronze. He established himself as one of the world's leading wheelchair racers in 2006 when he won three gold medals at the World Championships and broke the world records for 200m and 400m and won the first of three successive London Marathon titles. In 2008, he became of the UK's greatest ever Paralympians, winning four medals in Beijing including gold in the 800m and 1500m. In January 2009 he was awarded the MBE and in 2010 won the New York City Marathon. 2011 has started with multiple successes starting at the IPC Athletic Championships in Christchurch where claimed three gold medals over 800m, 1500m and 5000m. Further victories came at the Virgin London Marathon and at the BUPA Great Manchester 10km.
2012 was to be a year to savour starting with a routine victory at the Virgin London Marathon and then at the London Paralympic Games he entered into the immortals with four gold medals in front of rapturous crowds.
